In addition to Slovak, it will also be possible to display the inscriptions on the road signs in the affected villages in the languages of the minorities. This follows from the amendment to the law on the use of minority languages, which was adopted by the parliament in October and signed by President Zuzana Čaputová on Monday. TASR news agency was informed by presidential spokesman Martin Strižinec.

The law provides the relevant municipalities with the opportunity to display the name of the designated destination in the language of the local nationality in addition to the inscription in the national language on road signs.

Currently, the names of the affected municipalities are displayed in the language of the local minority on road signs marking the village boundary or on the buildings of public administration institutions. The measure affects those settlements where the number of Slovak citizens belonging to the national minority reaches at least 15 percent of the total population in two consecutive censuses. In such a case, the language of the local minority may also be used during official administration.

The amendment, according to which the names of the settlement parts can be indicated in the language of the given minority on road signs marking the village boundary, will enter into force on January 1, 2022.
