Hungary must not let the European Union decide on Hungarian laws, the Hungarians must insist on their own independence, Israeli philosopher Yoram Hazony said on Wednesday, at a discussion on conservatism organized by the Mathias Corvinus Collegium (MCC).

The philosopher, who is also the director of the Herzl Institute in Jerusalem, talked with Sándor Gallai, the head of the MCC School of Social and Historical Sciences, at the MCC Budapest Lectures event.
Yoram Hazony spoke, among other things, about the legal conflict between Hungary and Poland and the European Union.
He called it outrageous that many Europeans think they are doing good by dictating to Hungary, abolishing sovereignty and independence, claiming that they know better what is best. He emphasized:

Hungary has many common economic and military interests with Europe, which is why cooperation is important. But it is not possible for the European Court to decide on Hungarian laws, to decide on who should immigrate to Hungary

- he announced, calling on the Hungarians to insist on their own independence and freedom.
In his opinion

the Hungarian nation will either be independent, so its own parliament, government and courts will decide what laws will be in the country, or Hungary will practically be a kind of protectorate of the European empire, just like the German empire before.

In the case of Poland, according to his point of view, the question between the Poles and the European Union is actually: do Polish courts have the right to make decisions about how Poles live.

In the conversation entitled "Conservatism: Return to the Basics", the philosopher also touched on the following: after the Second World War, liberalism - as a worldview that proclaims individual freedom - became the dominant civil faith in the United States, Europe and many other democratic countries.
According to him, at the same time

In 2020, the neo-Marxist direction has already appeared in the United States. He described this as a cultural revolution which, according to him, cannot be called liberal at all, it does not emphasize the liberalism of the individual at all, but purposefully wants to destroy and transform the traditions of Western countries, whether it is about God, family, religious congregations, or the differences between men and women.

This, as he said, has already appeared in most English-speaking countries and will spread throughout the world.
He called it promising that there are European countries that are much more willing to fight for their national independence and freedom than, for example, the Americans. According to him, smaller countries such as Hungary or Israel have a particularly stimulating effect on conservative thinkers. The philosopher - whose new book "Conservatism: A Rediscovery" will be published next year - also talked about the fact that, in contrast to the liberal approach, not only liberal but also conservative democracy exists. Among other things, he cited Hungary and Israel as examples. He believed

conservative democracy means a state whose interest is to maintain the freedom of individuals, while at the same time basing the life of the country on the traditions and heritage of its predecessors.
