On Friday, the now traditional winter attraction of the High Tatras, built of ice, was opened to tourists. This time, the tourist attraction was modeled after the Cathedral of Saint James in Santiago de Compostela. Due to the increasingly serious epidemic situation in Slovakia, the ice temple in Tarajká, located above Ótátrafüred, can only be visited by tourists who have suffered from the coronavirus or who have a protection card, reported M1's V4 News.

The 11-meter-high structure made of 225 tons of ice was modeled on the popular European pilgrimage site, the St. James Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Spain, which is expected to be the most popular attraction in the High Tatras.

The structure was made of ten truckloads of ice blocks. The team of 35 ice sculptors and assistants from Slovakia, the Czech Republic and the United States spent a month building the attraction.

Ice sculptor Martin Boruta worked for 18 days to build the ice cathedral. "Of course, this is a team effort, but I mainly worked in the heights, sculpting the towers and fitting the finished decorative elements and statues into place," he said.
