The 2021 Hungarian Linguist Awards were presented at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA) on Thursday in Budapest.

The prestigious recognition of the Hungarian Linguistic Foundation this year goes to historical linguist Németh Michal, professor at the Jagiellonian University, regular member of the European Academy of Sciences in London; Klára Lengyel, lecturer at the Modern Hungarian Language Department of the ELTE Faculty of Arts (BTK); and journalist, radio and TV announcer Pál Szalóczy.

Each year, the award, which depicts an engraved pen on a golden pedestal, and the monetary award accompanying the recognition, can be awarded to persons who have done a lot for the maintenance of the Hungarian language in Hungary and beyond the border.

At the award ceremony, Bence Tuzson, the State Secretary responsible for public service at the Prime Minister's Office, emphasized: the Hungarian language represents a cultural foundation, as well as a cohesive and identity-shaping force that shapes the nation into a community. If we lose our language, then we ourselves will be lost - added the main patron of the award, emphasizing: that is why it is important to recognize those who have dedicated their work to the preservation and development of the Hungarian language.

He recalled that in the near future it will be 150 years since the journal Magyar Nyelvőr was launched at the academy. The recognition of the foundation represents the spirit of the language-cultivating journal founded in 1872, he added.

The Hungarian Language Foundation supports events, publications and endeavors for the research, preservation and education of the Hungarian language, István Keszi, the founder's representative, announced at the ceremony. As part of the foundation's activities this year, he mentioned that they organized the largest domestic speech contest with the ELTE lecturers, took books to the Highlands, Transylvania, Vojvodina, Transcarpathia, and also supported the Kossuth speech contest.
