High energy prices are the most important topic at the three-day meeting of the EU energy and environment ministers, which is one of the opening events of the French presidency, said Attila Steiner, the Secretary of State responsible for the development of the circular economy, energy and climate policy of the Ministry of Innovation and Technology (ITM) on Saturday.

He pointed out: after energy prices jumped significantly worldwide, the topic of official prices and utility reduction became a priority issue in all EU countries.

With the domestic utilities reduction program, Hungary can set a good example for those member states that are thinking about the introduction of official prices and the protection of final small consumers.

In those countries where official energy prices were not introduced, "rough and discouraging" price increases occurred, he emphasized, citing the Netherlands as an example, where the price of electricity increased by 144 percent in 8-9 months.

Within the framework of the event, the profession is looking for a solution to what could be done to reduce high energy prices; Hungary's position is that, among other things, it would be important to eliminate the various anomalies of the quota trading system.

In the longer term, it can help keep energy prices under control if the European Commission's latest proposal, published on New Year's Day, is accepted, according to which nuclear energy and natural gas would be considered sustainable, thereby contributing to the climate transition. "I don't think climate neutrality in 2050 can be achieved without nuclear energy," said the state secretary.
