The opening to the East is a real success story, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade declared on Friday in Delhi at the Indian-Hungarian business forum.

Péter Szijjártó said that the basis of the opening to the east was an economic consideration, according to which the role of the east would continuously increase. The fact that proves that this strategy was correct is the fantastic economic growth, he said.

He added that, in twelve years, the level of exports to the East was increased by 45 percent, trade between the Eastern world and Hungary increased by 48 percent, and 60 percent of foreign invested capital in Hungary came from the East.

According to Péter Szijjártó's presentation at the forum jointly opened with Minister of State for Trade Meenakashi Lekhi, the trade turnover between India and Hungary has continuously broken records, last year it reached one billion dollars after a 26 percent increase.

Taking these data into account, we can say that the Hungarian economy took its share of the growth of the Indian economy, he said.

According to Péter Szijjártó, due to the significant geographical distance between the two countries, the two governments have four tasks, and if they succeed in fulfilling them, then it is up to the businessmen to take advantage of the opportunities.

The Hungarian minister highlighted good relations between governments as one of the tasks, which is based on mutual respect. He mentioned that when the Russian-Ukrainian war broke out, the Hungarian government helped 6,218 Indian citizens to leave the region safely. In addition, 1,257 Indian students applied for the Hungarian higher education scholarship program, and through the general scholarship program, two hundred Indian students are provided with the opportunity to study at Hungarian universities.
