With this move, the country would save HUF 9-10 billion.

From now on, it should be considered that we hold the European Parliament and local government elections at the same time, stated Máté Kocsis, Fidesz faction leader, at a background discussion on Tuesday.

According to the politician, in times of crisis, the state and politics must start saving. In line with this, the group financing rules will also change, but they are also thinking about holding the European Parliament and municipal elections at the same time from 2024. The latter by pulling

the state would save at least HUF 9 billion,

since it costs about that much to organize an election.

Although the detailed rules will only be published next week, Kocsis revealed that the mandate of already elected municipal representatives and mayors would last until the fall of 2024, regardless of the postponement of the municipal election to the spring of 2024, i.e. in the sense of public law

the five-year cycle, the mandate of the elected local government officials would not be shortened.

European Parliament elections are held at the same time in the member states of the European Union, every five years, in the spring. Compared to this, the general election of local government representatives and mayors, pursuant to Article 35 of the Basic Law, must be held in October of the fifth year following the previous general election of local government representatives and mayors. This means that since the rules of the European Parliament election will not be changed, the Parliament will have to amend the relevant section of the Basic Law in order to be able to hold the two elections at the same time.
