Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Mihály Varga announced the good news in a Facebook post: Hungary was awarded for the successful issuance of bonds and effective debt management during the epidemic.

"With last fall's bond issue, Hungary won The Banker magazine's "The Banker's Deals of the Year Awards 2022" award.

The newspaper emphasizes: Hungary took advantage of the favorable interest rate environment and strong demand from Central and Eastern European countries with impressive timing.

In addition to the successful issuances, Hungary paid off its debt early last year by repurchasing 430 million dollars worth of foreign currency bonds and more than 2,000 billion HUF bonds. The national debt, which had increased due to the epidemic, was already on a downward path last year, and its ratio to the gross domestic product was improved to 76.8%.

Last year, at the Traveling Economist Assembly, I already explained: if I had to classify the economic policy areas of the past ten years, then debt management would receive the best evaluation. I still think so today, congratulations to the Public Debt Management Center!"
