The world needs peace, the solution to the crisis in Ukraine will test the wisdom of political leaders, Pope Francis said in his speech on St. Peter's Square at noon on Sunday.

The head of the Catholic Church said that he continues to pray for peace in Ukraine and the world as a whole. He asked the leaders of political life and international organizations to take action against trends that strengthen conflict and opposition.

"The world needs peace, but not a peace that is based on a balance of arms, based on mutual fear: this is not good, so we are going back seventy years in history," Pope Francis said.

He explained: "the crisis in Ukraine should have been a challenge, and if there is a will, it can be for wise statesmen who can build a better future for the new generations through dialogue."
