Amnesty International said in a statement Thursday that Ukrainian forces have harmed civilians by establishing bases and operating weapons systems in populated residential areas, including schools and hospitals. According to the organization, such actions violate international human rights and endanger civilians, as civilian objects are turned into military targets, reports CNN.
Agnès Callamard, Secretary General of Amnesty International, said: "We have documented a case where Ukrainian forces are putting civilians at risk, in violation of the laws of war.
The "attacked" position does not exempt the Ukrainian army from respecting international human rights, he stated.
Ukrainian presidential adviser Mihajlo Podolyak criticized the Amnesty report, accusing Moscow of trying to "discredit the armed forces of Ukraine in the eyes of Western societies." He added in a tweet:
It is a shame that Amnesty is involved in this disinformation and propaganda campaign.
