It was a historic mistake on the part of the Gyurcsány government, which has been confirmed to this day, that in 2007 it abolished the independent border guard by sending thousands of experienced border guards, and did not fully reorganize the tasks of border protection within the framework of the police. Thus, for the second time since 2015, border protection has to be significantly strengthened.

Since our country became a member of the Schengen zone within the European Union on December 17, 2007, the EU's internal borders have become freely passable, except for Romania and Croatia. As a Schengen border country, Hungary protects the EU against illegal migration, among other things. Gyurcsány's SZDSZ-MSZP government abolished the independent border guard at this time, for which it received a lot of criticism even then.

This error was first pointed out by the 2015 flood of migrants rushing to Europe. For this reason, the government decided to increase the border protection capabilities of the police.

However, due to the latest mass migrant invasion, border protection had to be reinforced with policemen and soldiers sent from elsewhere. Millions of refugees due to the war in Ukraine, increasing migration, as well as increasingly aggressive newcomers trying to cross the southern border forced a new reinforcement, the deployment of a contract border guard of 4,000 people.

Currently, an independent border hunting regiment is being organized within the Emergency Police. The reason is there, because as a result of the 2015 invasion, the first units of professional border hunters were formed there to deal with it.

The existing capacity of the Emergency Police is further strengthened by the recruitment, training and entry into service of four thousand contract border hunters.

The hiring and training of the first 1,200 people can begin shortly, so the soldiers and policemen currently serving at the border will be able to return to their units.

The deputy officers and officers of the new regiment, as well as its commander, will be professional police officers who serve in the Border Protection Directorate of the Emergency Police. The contract border hunters of the regiment to be created will be able to decide at the end of their contract whether - after further training and exams - they will continue their service as professional border hunters.
