The European Parliament accepted the report written by the French Green Party MEP Gwendoline Delbos-Corfield.

According to this, there is a danger that Hungary will seriously and systematically violate the European values that form the basis of the European Union. The report was voted with 433 yes votes, 123 no votes and 28 abstentions. All Hungarian left-wing representatives present also voted yes for the report.

The European Parliament listed its concerns in a statement:

  • the functioning of the constitutional and electoral system;
  • the independence of the judiciary and other institutions, the rights of judges;
  • corruption and conflicts of interest;
  • privacy and data protection;
  • freedom of expression, including media pluralism;
  • academic freedom;
  • freedom of religion;
  • freedom of assembly;
  • the right to equal treatment, including LGBTIQ rights;
  • the rights of persons belonging to minorities, including Roma and Jews, and protection against hate speech against these minorities;
  • fundamental rights of migrants, asylum seekers and refugees; and
  • economic and social rights

They condemned the Hungarian government's "deliberate and systemic efforts" to undermine the EU's core values, but noted that the lack of decisive EU action also contributed to the formation of a "hybrid regime" in Hungary. The report also condemned the inability of the Council of the European Union to make meaningful progress in the fight against abuses against democratic norms. The representatives called on the European Commission to use all the tools at its disposal, especially the budgetary conditionality system, to protect European values.

Balázs Hidvéghi, independent representative of the EP, reacted to the news of the vote. According to him, it has always been possible to negotiate with Hungary and it is still possible now, but this is not the goal of the European Parliament, because they want to blackmail, not reach an agreement. He added that they cannot accept in the EP that the Hungarian people said no to the Hungarian left and to the Brussels education for the fourth time in the spring, and elected a right-wing, national-conservative government, reads the Fidesz Facebook page.
