Instead of historical enmity, there is now historical friendship between Hungary and Serbia, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó announced on Friday at the biggest Serbian mass event of all time in Belgrade.

According to the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the head of the ministry spoke in Serbian at the event of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) and said that, although it was not always the case, the Hungarian nation now sees the Serbs as brothers and sisters.

"Our shared history has presented us with many trials, we have often seen each other as enemies. Today, all that has changed: we have become brotherly nations. What is all this due to? To whom exactly? To your president, Aleksandar Vucic!".

He then added: the Serbian head of state has achieved that instead of historical enmity, there is now historical friendship between the two countries.

"Under the leadership of your president, Serbia treats the Hungarian community in Vojvodina in such a way that it serves as an example for the whole world to follow. We Hungarians are grateful for that"

Péter Szijjártó emphasized that the two countries face similar challenges, as both Budapest and Belgrade are "unreservedly attacked by the international liberal mainstream".

"Why are they attacking us? Because we, Hungarians and Serbs, stand up for ourselves and our national interests, and we can do this because we have strong leaders. They are attacking us because we want peace in Ukraine and do not participate in increasing the risk of escalation of war. They attack us because we stick to family values, and they attack us because we don't let them dictate to us from outside”.

The minister also called it a common point that both in Hungary and Serbia "there are political forces that serve foreign interests and do not think of exploiting even human tragedies in order to make political gains for themselves. Such parties serving foreign interests must be defeated election after election, and fortunately we do this regularly in both countries," he emphasized.

"These attacks will not stop in the future either. They will attack us because they cannot understand that we, Hungarians and Serbs, are following our own national path and are successful. But we will not surrender to the attacks, we will persevere, we will continue to build a strong Serbia, a strong Hungary and a strong Hungarian-Serbian friendship," he concluded.
