The European Union plans to adopt further punitive measures against Russia and increase aid to Ukraine.

"The member states of the European Union agreed on Wednesday in New York, at their meeting on the occasion of the UN General Assembly, to introduce new sanctions against Russia and to increase the support provided to Ukraine," announced Josep Borrell, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

We have decided to take further punitive measures against Russia as soon as possible in cooperation with our partners”

- said Borrell after consulting with the heads of ministries of the member states.

In his announcement, the politician writes that Russia has chosen the path of confrontation by partial mobilization, by supporting illegal referendums on annexation and by threatening with weapons of mass destruction.

"The reference to nuclear weapons does not shake our resolve, determination and unity to stand by Ukraine and provide comprehensive support for Ukraine's ability to defend its territorial integrity and sovereignty for as long as necessary," Borrell said.

According to the EU High Representative, the partial military mobilization announced by Vladimir Putin was born out of panic and desperation:

It is absolutely clear that Putin wants to destroy Ukraine"

- said Josep Borrell to journalists in New York, emphasizing that new sanctions are being prepared against certain sectors of the Russian economy and the persons and organizations responsible for the war. He also said that he believes that the new sanctions will receive unanimous support in the Council of Ministers.
