Kenya Barris, the writer and producer of the remake of The Wizard of Oz, said the reimagined version includes LGBTQ representation and tells a story that reflects the world today, Barris revealed in an interview with Verity.

Warner Bros. has hired Kenya Barris to write and direct a remake of the iconic musical Oz, the great wizard, Deadline reported. The new version will be more diverse than some previous adaptations. While many details have yet to be revealed, it has been described as a "reimagining of the classic story of Dorothy's journey to Oz."

Kenya Barris revealed in an interview with Variety that the new version will include LGBTQ representation to tell a story that reflects the world.

Barris confirmed to Variety that there will be LGBTQ+ representation in the new Wizard of Oz. The filmmaker explained this by saying that it would more accurately reflect the world we live in today. He compares this to the original version, as it also featured world events in the 1930s.

“The original was an allegory and reflected what the world was like at the time with things like the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl – the North American weather phenomenon of huge dust storms. Now, however, we reflect where we are now. We will use different characters from LGBTQ, different cultural, social and economic communities to tell a story that reflects the world today," explained Kenya Barris.

The director is optimistic about the film project, but at the same time he is aware of the importance of the film, which he hopes will earn its place in the history of cinema, like its predecessor.
