According to the third instance court, the former MEP not only made preparations for espionage against the institutions of the European Union, but also carried it out.

In today's final ruling, the Court significantly aggravated the punishment imposed on the former member of the European Parliament from Jobbik, Béla Kovács.

The highest judicial forum found Béla Kovács guilty of the crime of espionage against the institutions of the European Union and budget fraud as well as the misdemeanor of falsifying private documents, and therefore sentenced him to five years in prison and ten years of ban from public affairs.

According to the verdict, the former politician can only be released conditionally after serving two-thirds of his sentence. Because of the classified data, only the relevant part of the verdict was public, so the court explained the reasoning behind closed doors.

The politician, who currently lives in Moscow, was not present at the sentencing – similarly to the second-degree proceedings.

KDNP:

There is a final judgment that the former member of the European Parliament from Jobbik, Béla Kovács, spied against the institutions of the European Union for Russia - the Christian Democratic People's Party wrote in its statement sent to MTI on Tuesday, commenting on the decision of the Curia.

"KGBéla" betrayed everything he swore to and did not look out for the interests of his country, they said.

They pointed out: although the proceedings against Béla Kovács started years ago, it seems that the left has not changed since then. The hundreds of millions of campaign grants coming from abroad prove that they continue to politicize according to external expectations, and therefore support the Brussels sanctions that brutally hit both Europeans and Hungarians - explained the smaller governing party, calling on the representatives of the left to stop policies that are against Hungarian interests .
