The MOL New Europe Foundation's Go Green program series aims to create the conditions for a sustainable future in our environment and community. The initiative called the City Tree Program was launched in the spring of 2022 with the cooperation of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Association of Cities with County Rights and the National Forestry Association, the Ministry of Agriculture recalled in its statement on Wednesday.
Settlements with more than 10,000 inhabitants could register for the foundation's first sustainability tender until April 27, for which a total of 111 registrations were received. In two phases of the program, a total of 7,000 trees will be planted in cities across the country this year. The settlements joining the program could choose from 16 tree species. The program also provides supporting stakes, covering mulch, and protective grids for the row trees, which will be sent to the locations together with the required trees. The National Forestry Association provided professional support for the election. The settlements receive a "unit package", which includes large-sized row trees suitable for inland tree planting and the necessary accessories for planting, as well as a guide and professional advice. State forestry farms also participate in the program.
The ministry reminds us that over the past two years, the Settlement Afforestation Program launched by the Ministry of Agriculture has been very successful, as part of which settlements with a population of less than 10,000 have planted 36,000 rowan trees in 1,350 locations. This initiative is the largest inland afforestation program since the regime change, which serves both to improve the country's environmental condition, to green the settlements and to promote forest plantations.
In the City Tree Program, the planting in the autumn period, and then the follow-up care, are carried out in the framework of the community program of the settlements. So far, more than 20 settlements have planted the required trees, often with the involvement of a kindergarten or school group. Among the winning cities, 84 settlements will receive saplings as well as an educational program, the aim of which is to develop and develop a conscious attitude towards sustainability and the importance of trees and forests among the young inhabitants of the cities. The educational program provided by the National Forestry Association takes place in each settlement in an educational institution designated by the municipality.
The aided settlements undertook to take care of the donated trees for at least seven years, replacing them if necessary, the Ministry of Agriculture announced.
