This year, the proportion of 19-29-year-olds currently living with their parents who are unsure when they can leave the "mommy hotel" has increased significantly, according to the K&H youth index. In the third quarter of this year, 48 percent of them could not guess when they would move, which is much higher than the 37 percent rate a year earlier. And 16 percent of young people living with their parents do not even plan to move.

In the 19-29 age group, there is a much higher proportion of those who currently live with their parents, but are unsure when they will move out - this is revealed, among other things, by the K&H third-quarter youth index. The representative research prepared for this purpose mapped the plans of those living in the "mama hotel".

Many do not yet see when they will leave
Young people living in the same household with their parents have become much more uncertain: 48 percent of them could not say when they will move. This is much higher than the 37 percent rate a year earlier. The increase in the number of those who are uncertain can be linked to the less favorable economic environment, the rise in inflation, and the increase in living expenses: for many young people in such an environment, the "mama hotel" can represent a safer background. In addition, the research revealed that a sixth, 16 percent, of young people living with their parents feel so good that they do not even plan to move.

How much do they charge?
More than half, 54 percent, of young people in "mama hotels" contribute to maintenance costs - a year earlier this was true for 46 percent of them, while in 2020 only 35 percent contributed to housing expenses.
Those who now take part in the expenses spend HUF 40,000 per month, which is the same amount as a year ago. According to the survey, young people living with their parents would move at the age of 26 on average: the same was 28 in 2018, and 25 in 2019, 2020 and 2021. Those who have already moved out of the Mamahotel left there on average when they were 20 years old.

K&H youth index
The K&H youth index, which stood at +10 points in the third quarter of 2022, examines the satisfaction and future expectations of young people aged 19–29 – in relation to housing, work, advancement opportunities, education, health, family, among other things. 300 young people took part in the research, data collection took place between August 29 and September 1, 2022.
