The city of Aachen and the awarding board unanimously awarded the 2023 Károly Prize to Volodymyr Zelenskyi and his people. According to their reasoning, the Ukrainian people defend not only their country, but also Europe and European values, writes Irén Rab in his opinion article on the portal of Magyar hírlap, we have seen this.

The city of Aachen and the awarding board unanimously awarded the 2023 Károly Prize to Volodymyr Zelenskyi and his people. According to their justification, the Ukrainian people protect not only their homeland, but also Europe and European values. With the award, they wanted to clearly indicate that Europe, and Germany in the first place, supports Ukraine, and that Ukraine's place is in the European Union. They will use all means to help them join as soon as possible, but at the same time I want to encourage them to continue their heroic fight.

The Károly Prize was founded in 1950 and since then it has been awarded annually to persons who have performed outstanding activities in the service of Europe and for the sake of European unity. The namesake is Károly the Great, the father of Europe, who united Western and Central Europe with his conquests, whom the Germans and the French alike respect as the founder of their history. In the past seventy-three years, there have been seventy-three winners, including two Hungarians, Gyula Horn and György Konrád. Through the personalities of the awardees, it is easy to gauge the European values the board thinks along.

President Zelensky logged in from his headquarters in the usual video, and now, in addition to money, he demanded an international court so that Russia could be severely punished.

Do the Brusselsites, who vehemently support Ukraine, know that Mirotvorec, this NGO center in Kyiv "dealing with Ukraine's national security, researching crimes against peace, humanity and international law", keeps a death list of Ukraine's perceived enemies? There were 187,000 names on this death list at the beginning of the war, and the number has swelled significantly since then. Do they know that the Ukrainian border guards will let anyone cross the border for a bribe of between two and five thousand dollars, but they will take away the Hungarians' passports? Do they know that food shipments arriving as aid are simply confiscated and sold for money? Do they know that President Zelenskyi liquidated the opposition press a long time ago and banned opposition parties labeled as pro-Russian? Have you already drunk the discount vodka named after the president, bottled in blue-yellow national colors?

In their opinion, is the continuous persecution of national minorities, Russians and Hungarians, compatible with European values? Because the Ukrainian state seriously violates the national, minority, individual and community rights of native Hungarians living in Transcarpathia. What's more: linguistic genocide, population exchange and ethnic cleansing are taking place in Transcarpathia at the expense of Hungarians. As is certainly the fate of the Russian population of the Donbass. According to the Hungarian National Legal Protection Service, Ukraine has indeed failed the human rights exam.

No one is asking for peace or a cease-fire, the people are not taking to the streets demanding an end to the war. Neither in Ukraine nor in Europe. Anyone who mentions a negotiating table is immediately stigmatized as a Putin friend. Although the fighting is taking place in the southeastern part of Ukraine, in the Donbass and for the Donbass, a thousand kilometers from the western borders of the country, according to the advanced European position, Russian aggression threatens the former members of the Warsaw Pact. The war hysteria is taking place in the spirit of this, Russia must be defeated militarily, brought to its knees economically and isolated politically. So that he never again thinks of himself as a great power. That is why the Ukrainians must be supported by all means, since they are actually fighting for Europe, for us, even at the cost of their lives. While they are fighting for their country, Europe is trying to destroy itself with anti-Russian sanctions and is drifting further and further into this escalating war.

Yet so many historical examples could be given of where this foolishness leads!
