Illegal immigration, the support of traditional family values, the distribution of EU funds and the Western Balkans were the topics of the meeting between Hungarian President Katalin Novák and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome on Wednesday.

The politicians of the two allied states touched on four topics during their meeting, the Communication Directorate of the Sándor Palace told MTI on Wednesday. According to the information, the first topic was illegal migration, and both politicians agreed that it should be curbed. The Italian Prime Minister plans to initiate a detailed discussion on the issue at the EU summit in Stockholm, because in his view, secondary migration is an important topic, but migration to the European Union (EU) must be stopped at the border. Measures are needed to prevent the actual entry of illegal immigrants. The Hungarian president explained the Hungarian position, which has not changed for years: illegal immigration is a threat to Europe, which must be stopped. The demographic and labor market problems of our region should not be remedied by encouraging immigration.

Strengthening traditional family values also helps young people to start a family and raise children more easily. A strong family policy is a fundamental interest and intention in both Italy and Hungary.

The third issue was the Western Balkan enlargement. The two politicians agreed that enlargement is needed as soon as possible, and this is not only in the interest of the six countries that want to join, but also in the interest of the EU.

The fourth topic was the issue of EU resources. The Italian Prime Minister initiates a more flexible use that meets the challenges of our time. The President of the Hungarian Republic also agreed that the resources that belong to the member states should be received, and rules of use should be applied that serve both the interests of the given nation and the European Union.
