The lawyers of the Marosvásárhely town hall are analyzing the possibility of the office suing the Maros County Board of Education for repeatedly refusing to allow the various requests of the city and the local community, most recently the request related to the Catholic school.
The news portal Székelyhon.ro asked Mayor Zoltán Soós about the matter.
According to the valid education law, the schools are maintained by the mayor's offices, but the education inspectorates are responsible for the organization of education. Each year, local governments must adopt the school network valid for the following school year, which includes all public and private foundation educational institutions, from kindergarten to twelfth grade. If the local government representatives want to make changes to the school network, they must also get permission from the school inspectorate, otherwise they cannot make changes.
The former II. Ferenc Rákóczi Roman Catholic High School cannot function as a sub-unit of the Bolyai Farkas High School in Marosvásárhely, as the school inspectorate did not approve the local government's request in this regard. The directorate responsible for schools of the Mayor's Office of Marosvásárhely asked the county education inspector twice to approve that the former II. Ferenc Rákóczi Roman Catholic High School should be a subdivision of Bolyai Farkas High School. Currently, the Catholic school operates within the Bolyai school, but in a separate building. Functioning as a sub-unit would have been very important especially in the case of preparatory classes and the computer distribution of eighth-graders, as in the latter case the sub-unit would have had a separate code. However, the school inspectorate did not approve the town hall's request.
At Thursday's regular council meeting Zsolt Tamási , the former director of the Catholic school and the current vice-principal of Bolyai, spoke as a representative of the local government and requested that the department of the town hall inform the ministry that
in accordance with the legal conditions, they requested that the former Catholic school operate as a subdivision of Bolyai, and this was arbitrarily refused by the school inspectorate. At the same time, he asked city hall lawyers and the school board to analyze the possibility of suing the superintendent of schools over the decision.
When contacted by Székelyhon Zoltán Soós , the mayor of Marosvásárhely, stated that the city hall's lawyers are analyzing the possibility of suing the school inspectorate.
"If possible, we will challenge the decision of the school inspectorate, since it did not approve the school network requested by the council. Unfortunately, the school inspectorate did not take into account the needs of the city and the local community, but made a political decision. The Ministry of Education can also modify the school network, or even approve the requested subdivision, but this is unlikely, since, as I have already mentioned, this was a political decision," explained Soós in relation to the case.
