László Gyuricza recently made headlines for a self-made video in which he made amends with Transcarpathian guest workers who were harassing local girls. Now he has a cross on his shoulder: he himself once erected it and decided to renovate and resculpt it.

"You can go and get tough with the Chechens," he said in April regarding the recalcitrant guest workers, in an interview with Mandiner he recalls the incident like this:

"There is a worker's hostel in the city, which is rented out by an entrepreneur to private individuals and companies. Unfortunately, the mayor has no say in who moves in there. Several reports and complaints were received by the clerk, including me, that the Transcarpathian men who moved in were harassing the girls. This house is not in that segregated area (...), it is a good, calm, particularly beautiful neighborhood.

These people came to Kerepes last fall, and since then there have been a lot of reports, mainly about their behavior, and also littering.

As far as I know, the people came from Transcarpathia, Ukraine, but from an area where no shots were fired. Specifically, they came from Munkács, I can neither confirm nor deny whether they took advantage of the opportunity to come over with the right of asylum and work here. It's not my job.

I didn't have a problem with the fact that they were here, but with the fact that the Kerepes girls were harassed and, despite repeated calls, they were not able to behave like the Kerepes people, or as any normal person would expect if they moved in next door.

(…) after I went there and recorded the whole thing on video, then put it on Facebook, they packed it up that evening, the house was empty the next day."

Public safety, public cleanliness

László Gyuricza is known to be pro-law and order, he does everything to restore the public safety - and public cleanliness - of Kerepes, so he is not afraid to sound critical, even towards the police.

"It must be stated that there are not enough police officers nationally, this is the result of everything when we talk about the public safety situation in Kerepes. There is no one to protect the order, it happens that there is no police presence at all in the area of jurisdiction of the Kistarcsa Police Station, response forces are commanded from elsewhere if necessary. At the moment, the police can only respond to disorder, there is no denying that when something happens, they try to solve the problem as quickly as possible, but

for some mysterious reason, shooters, brawlers, and rioters are able to sleep at home the very next day.

Hungary has the highest rate of incarceration in the EU

I see that there is not enough prevention. We are currently trying to improve the situation with civil organizations (civilian police). Of course, it is not the patrols who can do that there are not enough police officers. I was elected by 12,000 people who expect something, for example order, calm, development.

As mayor, I most definitely expect the protection of order, not just a reaction to disorder."
