The National Security Service of Ukraine (SZBU) and the anti-corruption agency (NABU) searched the houses of Andrij Baloha, the mayor of Munkacs, and Mihajko Lanyó, the chairman of the Munkacs district council, on suspicion of particularly large amounts of corruption.

According to the consistent reports of Ukrainian news agencies, national and Transcarpathian news portals, this morning the SZBU and NABU conducted joint house searches of several leading Transcarpathian officials and a number of companies due to the suspected corruption sale of three hectares of communal land around the Avangard stadium in Münkac.

According to the suspicion, Baloha, abusing his official power, contributed to the local government auctioning the land located in the center of the city for a fraction of its real value. The auction was won by a company belonging to Mihajlo Lanyo, the president of the district council.

According to the SZBU source, the damage to the city's budget could reach one hundred million hryvnias (approximately one billion forints).

Recently, the local government led by Baloha has taken several measures that harm the interests of the Hungarian community: a year ago, they removed the statue of Turul from the Munkacci castle, then in January of this year, they fired several Hungarian heads of institutions in the Munkacci sub-region, as well as prohibiting the placement of Hungarian symbols in public institutions.
