The theater went in a very bad direction when it offered discounts to the members of the Democratic Coalition, said the president of the Hungarian Theater Society.
It is known that the Democratic Coalition (DK) offers discounted tickets to the Katona József Theater for its members. According to DK's message, they intend to thank the recipients for being members of the community with a new, current opportunity. Until the end of November, members of Ferenc Gyurcsány's party can buy tickets for Katona's performances at a 20-30 percent discount.
Fair play? The Katona József Színház gives a serious discount to DK members
Magyar Nemzet asked the leaders of the two major theater trade organizations if they had experienced something similar in Hungarian theater before, that is, that they give discounts to viewers on ticket prices based on party sympathy.
As Attila Vidnyánszky pointed out, a responsible theater can only offer a discount to those with a more difficult fate, to any social group living with difficulties.
"By the way, this is also the task of a theater," he added, emphasizing: in the case of the Democratic Coalition, he can hardly find an explanation for this.
"They've crossed a line again and are opening doors that will be hard to close." This attitude is disgusting. By the way, the application for the directorship of the István Örkény Theater was also the same (that is, the application was announced long before the end of the mandate), but we slipped through that matter too, added the head of the Hungarian Theater Society.
The president of the Hungarian Theater Company, László Keszég, was also called in connection with the case, who had not yet heard about this unprecedented incident this morning, and did not have time to deal with it because he was preparing for a show.
The managing secretary of the theater company, Márta Vajda, told the paper that the theaters can decide for themselves to whom they give a discount. It can be a professional ticket, but people with disabilities or those living in poor financial conditions can also receive such support. It is often the case that they offer a discount to people living in the district where the theater operates, usually to pensioners.
For a theater to support a political party to such an extent that it gives its members cheaper tickets is not professionally justified, and I can't even give you a previous example of this - said Márta Vajda.
- The Katona József Színház, as one of the most visited theaters, has not taken a stand on political matters so far, although it deals strongly with current issues, but it does not do so at the party level - said Márta Vajda.
When asked why it is that almost exclusively the left-wing narrative is expressed in their performances intended to sensitize society, and there was also an example where the play was inspired by the private life of a Fidesz politician, the executive said: he does not think that only the left-wing narrative is presented and in the theater, since they deal with patriotism in the same way as with globalism.
