The LMP shows that there is another political offer to manage Budapest, and for this it is looking for a candidate whose party affiliation does not jump out at people, said co-president Péter Ungár at the LMP Budapest congress on Saturday.
At the event broadcast online, Ungár emphasized: they are looking for a candidate who applies for authorization to Budapest, who represents the interests of the sixty percent who use public transport and is able to think beyond one cycle. Anyone who wants to expand and not reduce public transport knows that all developments that are "green" are good.
Budapest does not need skyscrapers and luxury apartments, but parks and social rental apartments, "and there is no negotiation on this". He added that they will not support a mayoral candidate who does not have a content statement.
He said: he is not naming anyone for the time being, "because the jacket is not sewn to the button", and "waiting also has its joy".
He went on to say that in Mayor Gergely Karácsony's politics, what matters is not what he represents, but how he can position himself as Viktor Orbán's victim on Facebook. He stated that the person who talks a few months before the local government election about what form of government is needed in Hungary and calls his opposition colleagues pro-republicans is not necessarily preparing to become a city manager, but perhaps to compete again in 2026.
Speaking about the joint list of the opposition in Budapest, he said: a living person cannot follow the negotiations. And about the opposition coalition in Budapest, he said that everyone wants to play it, really wants to, but nobody actually wants it to succeed.
He criticized that the discourse is not about content, but about persons. He said that every election is a referendum on Viktor Orbán, every problem or solution of the opposition is Ferenc Gyurcsány, Christmas is the only hope.
According to him, whining and whining cover up thoughtlessness, and he promised to break up with all this.
He saw that Fidesz's side is in chaos in the politics of the capital, that the ruling party for more than 13 years cannot nominate anyone to manage the capital. This is because it is not possible to represent the people of Budapest at the same time and to use all political tools to politicize against the people of Budapest.
Péter Ungár defined the LMP as a worldview party that can define itself. According to him, his party is unique among the Hungarian opposition.
He pointed out: the LMP is the only green party in Hungary, for which the question of whether Lake Balaton will be concreted is more important than whether there are cordons around the Karmelita monastery. He also emphasized that the European Union is not the source of all good things and the market is not omnipotent. They also know that GMOs are dangerous and will fight against "battery colonization" until the last moment.
According to him, the "annoying intellectual civil war" prevailing in Hungarian politics must be overcome. He said: the LMP is the only party that makes a completely opposite offer.
Evaluating the result of the previous parliamentary election, he declared: it was such a defeat that everything had to be rebuilt from there. He added that the LMP is the only party that has learned from the dramatic failure of 2022.
Criticizing the other opposition parties, he said: it does not mean renewal if sleeping in the MTVA headquarters is exchanged for breaking the cordon, or, like Momentum, they sometimes realize that Ferenc Gyurcsány gave the Ószöd speech.
He added: neither do they think, like the DK, that the renewal of opposition politics, if they get it, Viktor Orbán is more important than any public matter.
He emphasized: honesty is needed, they have a much bigger road ahead of them than what they have overcome so far, and they may make mistakes, but what they are doing is at least of some kind, and that is quite a lot in Hungary today.
