It is now supported by data: 86 percent of Hungarians oppose soldiers from European countries or NATO soldiers fighting in Ukraine, according to a March poll by Századvég.
After several leading European politicians (joining the war rhetoric of French President Emmanuel Macron) recently raised the possibility of European countries supporting Ukraine against Russia by sending soldiers, Századvég examined the position of Hungarian public opinion on some issues related to the Russian-Ukrainian armed conflict.
As a starting point, the authors of the survey emphasize that Hungarians see the conflict of great power interests and the inability of the United States and Russia to compromise as the reasons for the outbreak and prolongation of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
Accordingly, three-quarters of those surveyed (75 percent) believe that the economic and military interests of major powers (the USA and Russia) collide in the armed conflict, and that there is no peace because neither side is willing to give way.
As can be seen from Századvég's previous analysis , Emmanuel Macron has recently suggested the necessity of deploying European ground troops in Ukraine on several occasions. Following the French president's pro-war vision, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis stated that "we cannot rule out any form of support to Ukraine", while Czech President Petr Pavel would support discussions about a possible military presence in Ukraine.
In addition, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski welcomed Macron's proposal for war, adding that "the presence of NATO troops in Ukraine is not unthinkable", and according to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, the French president merely "publicly acknowledged the obvious" with his pro-war speech, which will spur Europe to recognize it. , that he "must do more" for Ukraine.
The public importance of the mentioned question is shown by the fact that, according to the research data, 77 percent of the respondents heard that Emmanuel Macron and other EU politicians, as well as Ukrainian leaders, urged European military intervention in the Russian-Ukrainian war.
According to Századvég, it is important to point out at the same time that the Hungarian population firmly rejects the idea of military intervention in Ukraine.
The survey reveals that 86 percent of Hungarians would not agree with soldiers from European countries or NATO soldiers fighting in Ukraine.
It is a frequently recurring claim in international public discourse that Ukraine is protecting Europe with its military efforts, since Russia (after the possible defeat of Ukraine) would continue to expand on the continent.
According to the poll, the overwhelming majority of Hungarians do not agree with this assumption.
It can be concluded that 8 out of 10 respondents (80 percent) believe that Russia (following the possible military defeat of Ukraine) would probably not attack Hungary. Similarly, 79 percent of Hungarians do not consider it likely that Russia would attack NATO if it defeats Ukraine, Századvég's analysis shows.
