The works of the external and internal restoration of the St. George Church in Ják, which lasted for several years, have been completed, the next step may be the construction of the visitor center, which already has construction plans, architect Márton Sarkadi, the project manager of the Diocese of Szombathely, told MTI on Friday.

The restoration of the interior of the church was already completed in 2022, since then the restoration work on the facade of the church was also completed, the most important of which was the restoration of the well-known western gate of the Ják church, he said, adding that the church garden was renewed, including walking paths and the modernization of lighting.

as part of the renovation, the XIII. also the complete restoration of the 19th century St. James chapel.

He added that the next step is the construction of the visitor center and exhibition space connected to the church in Ják, in preparation for which the original apostle statues decorating the gate of the abbey church were transported from the Savaria Museum on Friday.

Three of these can be viewed temporarily in Ják, in a building connected to the church, in a tourist pavilion, the rest will be placed in the art storage of the Diocese of Szombathely until the visitor center is built.

Márton Sarkadi said: since 2018, the Diocese of Szombathely has received more than HUF 2 billion in government support for the restoration of the Ják church, and more than HUF 1 billion is needed to establish the visitor center - for which the abbey buildings serve as a basis, but a new large exhibition space would also be built.

According to the plans, the renovated abbey church will be solemnly blessed on Sunday, April 21, by County Bishop János Székely.
