The new Georgian national team surprisingly reached the round of 16 at the European Football Championship after defeating the Portuguese team, which is already a sure group leader, 2-0 in the last, third round of Group F in Gelsenkirchen on Wednesday. The Hungarian national football team finished in fifth place at the end of the group stage, just behind the round of 16.

The last hope of the Hungarians was in Group F, to overtake another third-placed team in addition to the third-placed Croatians in Group B by two points, but this did not work out, because the Georgian team beat Portugal, which was already a sure group leader, 2-0. In addition to the first and second places in the six groups, the four best third placed in the top 16.

This time, after the two-goal defeats suffered by the Swiss and the hosts, Germany, the students of national team captain Marco Rossi beat Scotland 1-0 with a goal scored by Kevin Csoboth in the 100th minute, thus ending the tournament with three points and a minus-three (2-5) goal difference.

Three years ago, they were also eliminated in the group stage of the previous continental competition, when they finished fourth with two points behind France, Germany and Portugal.

The national team will next visit Germany in Düsseldorf on September 7 in the fourth season of the League of Nations.

In the other match of Group F, the Turkish national team defeated the Czech Republic 2-1, which was playing with a man disadvantage from the 20th minute, and the Arda Gülers reached the round of 16, and the Czechs had a bye.
