The Hungarian Foreign Minister sent a message from Moscow.

The efforts of the Hungarian government's peace mission must be stepped up due to the risk of an escalation of the war in Ukraine, which is more serious than ever before, and work must be done to keep diplomatic channels open, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó stated on Monday in Moscow.

In his meeting with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, the head of the ministry emphasized that there was a more serious risk of escalation than ever before in connection with the war in Ukraine, which has been raging for more than a thousand days.

"And we see that many dangerous and irresponsible decisions have been made in the past period, which pose special dangers for a neighboring country like Hungary," he warned.

Péter Szijjártó emphasized that, in view of the serious danger of escalation, "the efforts of the peace mission must be stepped up."

"We believe that the past thousand days have proven that there is no solution to this war on the battlefield, so this war can only be ended through negotiations, and diplomatic channels must be kept open for negotiations," he opined.

"Those who close these diplomatic channels or attack those who keep these channels open do not really want peace," he added.

"And since we want peace, I hope that our discussion today will be able to bring us closer to the cause of peace," he continued.

Finally, the minister also mentioned that the government's "completely clear and accepted, public objective" is the development of bilateral relations with Russia in the areas not affected by the sanctions.

"I hope that we can make progress in these two cases today," he concluded.
