At the request of the Romanian Hungarian Democratic Association (RMDSZ), the Save Romania Association (USR) withdrew its draft law on public administration reorganization, the RMDSZ announced.

"The Hungarian community in Romania showed unity and strength on December 1st, and the majority political formations also have to count on this strength, they cannot decide about us without us. It was with this strength that we requested in the parliament today the withdrawal of the draft requiring administrative reorganization containing regulations that are disadvantageous for our community, and the USR withdrew the proposal," quoted Attila Cseke, the leader of the Senate faction of the RMDSZ, in the statement of the association.

The RMDSZ's public administration politician recalled: the USR "wiped the dust off Basescu's public administration reorganization plan" and again submitted to the parliament this fall the legislative amendment advocated by the former head of state.

The draft contained several provisions harmful to Romania and the Hungarian community,

such as, for example, the merging of smaller villages, the elimination of small towns or the breaking up of block Hungary, he detailed. Furthermore, the draft would have resulted in local and county self-governing administration being further away from the citizens - read the announcement of the RMDSZ.

The leader of the opposition USR, which defines itself as a center-right party, and its two representatives in the Senate submitted to the Bucharest parliament in October the first draft law of the party's public administration reform package, which would have slimmed down the state by drastically reducing the number of municipalities.

The USR recommended that the counties be merged according to development region, so instead of the current 41 counties, 7 counties would have remained, settlements with less than 20,000 inhabitants would not have been able to have the status of a city, and villages with a population of less than 3,000 inhabitants would have been merged with other settlements.

Federation President Kelemen Hunor announced at his press conference on Monday:

the RMDSZ recommends to Transylvanian Hungarians for "the lesser evil", USR president Elena Lasconi, .

In response to a journalist's question, he said: in exchange for the support, Elena Lasconi is expected to withdraw or reject the draft administrative law submitted by the USR. "This will not become a law, we will protect the Hungarian counties and communities," stated the president of the RMDSZ on Monday.

In the second round of the presidential election in Romania on December 8, it will be decided whether USR president Elena Lasconi or Calin Georgescu, who is supported by anti-Hungarian and extremist parties and openly sympathizes with fascist and legionnaire ideals, will be the next president of Romania.
