Roughly 240,000 people may be exempted from social security payments this year. Those who did not ask for their tax discount to be taken into account last year can easily use the discounts in their tax return with a few more clicks until May 20, András Tállai informed MTI.

The Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Finance explained: families with children, first-time married couples, mothers with four or more children, and people suffering from certain diseases receive a discount from the tax.

Most people are exempt from paying tax thanks to the family discount. In 2019, more than 115,000 people paid not only social security but also contributions, these parents received almost their entire gross earnings

Anyone who is entitled to a tax discount should definitely check to see if it is included in the tax return draft recommended by the tax office, said the state secretary.

For example, in May 2020, only nearly 700,000 parents took advantage of the family discount, which means that there may be hundreds of thousands of those who failed to declare to their employer about the use of the tax discount last year - stressed András Tállai. Those affected still have time: they can add to their return until May 20, and the tax office will remit the rightfully claimed tax amount within 30 days.

András Tállai also addressed the government's family support policy, which even the coronavirus crisis could not override. He said that in the past period, several rules were introduced to help families and mitigate the harmful effects of the pandemic. Thus, for example, the tax exemption for mothers with four children debuted in 2020, with the state leaving more than twenty billion forints annually to around 45,000 mothers with large families, who will be exempt from social security payments for the rest of their lives thanks to the rule

He recalled that from July 1, 2020, the family discount system was further expanded, because since then the family discount can be deducted from the total amount of the social security contribution. As a result, the amount that can be left with parents has increased by one and a half percentage points, tens of thousands of lower-earning parents can take home their entire wages tax-free, explained András Tállai.

The state secretary also highlighted the government's latest tax reduction measure, which ensures tax exemption for those under the age of 25. The rule, which will enter into force on January 1, 2022, will leave HUF 140 billion for young people.
