Gergely Karácsony would stand down from the mayor's seat barely a year and a half after his election, instead targeting the opposition coalition's candidacy for prime minister.

In view of the prime minister's ambitions, the evaluation of the mayor's city policy and performance since the fall of 2019 is an unavoidable question. Századvég examined what Budapest voters think of Gergely Karácsony and his one and a half year job as city manager.

According to the majority, things are going in the wrong direction in the capital

The research highlights that the majority (53 percent) of the citizens of the capital see that things are going in the wrong direction in Budapest at the moment, while 37 percent of them evaluate the developments in the capital positively. At the same time, the opinion of Gergely Karácsony is divisive, the mayor was unable to win over the majority of Budapest voters.

48 PERCENT OF THE RESPONDENTS WAS UNFAVORABLE, WHILE 47 PERCENT OF THEM FORMED A FAVORABLE OPINION OF GERGELY KÁRÁCSONY.

While there is a relative majority of voters in the city with an opposition orientation (49 percent would vote for the opposition coalition, 41 percent for Fidesz), 50 percent of the respondents would like to see a new person at the head of Budapest, while the proportion of those who support the mayorship of Gergely Karácsony is 38 percent (lower than personal liking index).

The question is rightly raised whether all this is because they would actually prefer to see him as prime minister? However, the survey also reveals that only 20 percent of Budapest residents want the mayor to run for prime minister in 2022, 76 percent would expect him to either stay in Budapest and fill out his time, or leave his role.

There are a majority of those who think that the city functioned better under Tarlós

It can be stated that, according to the people of Budapest, István Tarlós was a better manager of the capital than the current mayor. The research reveals that half of the respondents (50 percent) think that things in Budapest went better during Tarlós's mayorship, while 37 percent consider Karácsony's administration to be more effective.
