The government considers it of utmost importance that public services operate without interruption, including that the continuity of the water utility service providers' performance is ensured under all circumstances, since access to drinking water is a fundamental human right.

In the past period, there have been several requests from local governments and other service providers for the Hungarian state to take part in the operation of the water utilities they own.

In accordance with the government's intention, Nemzeti Vízművek Zrt. started operating on January 1, 2021, which exercises the ownership rights and obligations of the state over state-owned water utility providers and water utility systems in order to maintain uniform, more efficient operation and security of supply. .

The operation of the company also made it possible for local governments and service providers operating under their ownership to participate in a state integration process by voluntarily handing over property related to public services to the state.

This creates an opportunity for local governments to carry out a portfolio clean-up, and if they deem it expedient, to hand over public service tasks to the state free of charge, taking security of supply aspects and consumer interests into account.

In the integration process subject to specific conditions, the state is represented by Nemzeti Vízművek Zrt. The signing of the agreements is voluntary on the part of the parties and is always preceded by a negotiated process.

Municipalities and service providers wishing to join the integration process are advised to find out in advance about the conditions published on the website of Nemzeti Vízművek Zrt., on the basis of which they can consider their participation.

It is important to note that the submission of the application for accession does not automatically mean the conclusion of the integration agreement on the part of Nemzeti Vízművek Zrt., because in each case it is done on the basis of a detailed investigation and consideration of individual circumstances.
