The Hungarian state bought the Batthyány family's archival certificates, 520 documents, for 5.6 million euros, Balázs Orbán, State Secretary of the Prime Minister's Office, announced on Monday in Budapest.

The priceless cultural relics and the correspondence of the former Batthyány estates provide an insight into the centuries-old functioning of the Kingdom of Hungary . By examining them in a scientific manner, the defining events and connections of Hungarian history can be better reconstructed - said Balázs Orbán at the event held at the Hungarian National Archives (MNL).

Csaba Szabó, the director general of the MNL, emphasized: nothing guarantees the preservation of the name of the aristocratic family more authentically than the entry of the certificates into the Hungarian National Archives.

As the chief archivist György Rácz explained, the documents taken out of the country in 1945 and kept in Vienna for more than 75 years will be available for scientific research after they have been counted, processed and digitized.
