There will be elections in Hungary, and this will determine the relationship between the European Union and Hungary in the coming period, stated the strategic director of the Center for Fundamental Rights in Budapest on Wednesday.

István Kovács the EU recovery fund : although the EU has created an unprecedented financial instrument for the recovery of the economy, it will most likely "not fulfill its mission" . He said: more and more people in the EU are vaccinated, so the chance that the economy will have to be shut down due to the epidemic, as before, is getting smaller and smaller.

He emphasized: the economy has already started to recover from the crisis, the GDP growth in Hungary was record high in the previous quarter, and Europe is also performing better. However, the fund created by the EU has not yet played any role in this, since it has not been possible to disburse any money from it, he said.

István Kovács called it unacceptable that Hungary does not receive the money due to it, either by referring to the Child Protection Act or something else. He said: the agreement was close until the adoption of the law, but since then more and more conditions have been imposed, and "there is a real chance" that there will be no decision until the elections.

According to the strategy director, this means a clear intervention in Hungarian domestic politics , the aim of which is to weaken the reigning government.

Speaking about the upcoming German elections, he stated that although many criticisms have been made of Chancellor Angela Merkel, the successor candidates seem to be "classically worse" . However, since Hungarian-German relations rest on a strong historical and economic basis, he does not consider it likely that they would be damaged in the event of a change of German government.

Attila Kovács called the decision of the EU court regarding the rule of law clause . He pointed out: the negotiation in the accelerated procedure also indicates that they want a decision before the spring elections, so that, if appropriate, the procedure against Hungary can be started. Attila Kovács evaluated this as an indirect but strong interference in the Hungarian elections.

Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, who brought up the gender issue for the first time in September last year, also called it important.

of the investigation launched by the EU's anti-fraud office Katalin Cseh

Attila Kovács highlighted the Slovenian EU presidency: a hearing is planned in December in the procedure according to Article 7, and in October there will be a Western Balkans EU summit, the agenda of which includes migration due to the situation in Afghanistan, as well as Serbian EU membership supported by Hungary .

He also called it a big question how the European community reacts to the conduct and results of the Russian elections in September. According to Attila Kovács, the EU should put ideological issues in relation to China and Russia to the background and strive for pragmatic cooperation based on mutual benefits.
