On October 6, the 172nd anniversary of the execution of the Arad martyrs, commemorations are being held all over the country and beyond the border.

The central commemoration begins on Wednesday morning - in accordance with tradition - in front of the Parliament. The national flag of Hungary will be raised at 8:00 a.m. at Kossuth Lajos Square and then lowered to half-mast.

The commemoration will begin at 10 a.m. in the Fiumei út cemetery, at the Batthyány mausoleum, at which Bence Rétvári, the Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of Human Resources, will give a speech. This event will also be broadcast live on the Facebook page of National Holidays and Memorial Days.

In addition, commemorations and wreath-layings are held in many rural settlements and beyond the border.

In 2001, the government declared October 6 as the day of mourning for the Hungarian nation, when the 13 martyrs executed in Arad after the defeat of the revolution and freedom struggle of 1848-49, as well as Count Lajos Batthyány, the head of Hungary's first independent and responsible government, who was executed that day in Pest, are remembered.
