"We take strict action against animal abusers. We will protect our favorites!” - Prime Minister Viktor Orbán evaluated the new legislation adopted by the Parliament on Tuesday on his social media page. According to Máté Kocsis, leader of the Fidesz faction and one of the proponents of the proposal, one of the strongest animal protection laws in Europe has been passed. He emphasized: the consequences of environmental damage, animal cruelty and illegal animal fighting have become stricter.

István Simicskó , the faction leader of the KDNP, pointed out: "We are not only tightening the legal environment, but we are also ensuring responsible animal husbandry, which is in the interest of all of us."

Based on the amendment to the Animal Protection Act , from January 1, 2022, breeding can be punished with imprisonment of one to five years, repeat animal abusers with imprisonment of up to three years, especially repeat animal abusers with imprisonment of up to five years, and those who destroy several animals by putting out poison, in addition, poisoning becomes punishable . preparation as well. In addition to the organizers of animal fights, participants can also be punished , seized animals can only be kept in unfavorable housing conditions for as long as necessary, and animal cruelty committed in public can be punished more severely. From October 4, the ban on keeping animals will be registered in the Register of Public Administration Sanctions.

Fidesz's Péter Ovádi , ministerial commissioner responsible for the renewal and implementation of the National Animal Protection Program, the action against breeders is also unique in the European Union. He considers it particularly important that the proposal was developed together with civil organizations.

Zoltán Seres , the head of the Orpheus Animal Protection Association, told MTI yesterday that the best thing for a stray animal is the one that is never born. By tightening the laws, it is hoped that unnecessary direct and ignorant reproductions will be curbed, and it can be a great help to the animal protection associations . which are often helpless. Currently, the illegal breeding of animals and the abuse of animals result in many abandoned, stray and suffering animals.

Most of the animal rescue and animal protection tasks could be prevented if the population treated their animals properly, he noted. He expressed his hope that the courts in animal protection cases will make use of the possibilities provided by the law and impose their criminal sentences.
