The President of the European Parliament (EP), David Sassoli, died on Tuesday at the age of 65 due to a serious illness, the spokesperson of the EP President announced.

According to the information, Sassoli died on Tuesday at 1:15 a.m. in the hospital of Aviano in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of Italy. The European Parliament's presidential cabinet announced on Monday that on December 26, the president of the European Parliament was hospitalized in Italy in a serious state of health. His treatment was necessary due to serious complications caused by insufficient functioning of his immune system.

David Sassoli was born on May 30, 1956 in Florence. He was a member of the European Parliament for more than 10 years after switching from journalism to politics. The socialist politician began his career as a journalist at the daily newspaper Il Tempo in Rome, then, among other things, he was the presenter of the evening news of the Italian public television station RAI before being elected as a member of the European Parliament as a member of the Italian Democratic Party (PD) in 2009. He was the President of the European Parliament from July 3, 2019.

According to information, the first round of voting on the election of Sassoli's successor is expected to be held on the Tuesday working day of the European Parliament session scheduled for next week in Strasbourg.
