On Monday, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán discussed the crisis situation on the Russian-Ukrainian border with Charles Michel, the President of the European Council, by phone, Bertalan Havasi, head of the Prime Minister's Press Office, informed.

The two leaders noted that the situation was deteriorating, but agreed that diplomatic efforts should continue to resolve the conflict peacefully.

They stated: further dialogue is necessary, because avoiding war is in the interest of all of Europe, including Hungary.

After the consultation, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán emphasized the importance of the negotiation on his social media page.

However, the news also reported that in the event of a Russian attack on Ukraine, up to one million refugees could arrive in Poland, leading Polish officials said in their statements quoted on Monday. They also confirmed that the Polish Ministry of the Interior and local governments are preparing to accept refugees.

Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Przydacz told the Polish commercial channel Radio Plus on Monday: the situation in Ukraine will hopefully not escalate, but Poland must prepare for all eventualities, including the possible arrival of "many, many thousands" of refugees. According to the worst-case scenario, the number of refugees is "even much higher than this". He also said that in preparation for such a version, the Polish Ministry of the Interior has been preparing "infrastructure and plans" for weeks.

Ryszard Terlecki, the vice-president of the Polish Sejm, in an interview published on Sunday evening on the website of the Krakow daily Dziennik Polski, confirmed the press reports according to which the leaders of the Polish Voivodeships were instructed to prepare to accept a large number of refugees.
