The head of the Polish ruling party defended Hungarian relations and the Visegrad Cooperation. Jaroslaw Kaczyński, the president of the Polish right-wing ruling party Law and Justice (PiS), gave an interview to the weekly Sieci, who was also asked about Polish-Hungarian relations, Mandiner reports.

The president of PiS gave an interview to the Sieci weekly. One of the journalist's questions was: Hungary has been Poland's ally in Europe in recent years, but does Orbán's current coolness on the issue of war undermine relations?

Jaroslaw Kaczyński replied:

"Let's examine the question with a cool head! Hungary supported all proposed sanctions and condemned Russian aggression. The Hungarians oppose the sanctions on Russian oil imports, but unfortunately Germany and several other important EU member states do the same. We are aware of the differences between the Hungarian and Polish economies. First of all, Hungary is deeply dependent on Russia in several areas, which increased under the post-communist Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány. We know this is hard to change.

We know that Hungary has a different history, so they approach things differently. And there is also a significant Hungarian minority in Ukraine.

We criticize Hungary's attitude and hope that it will get more involved. However, this does not mean that we should stop cooperating in other possible areas. And to be honest, we also have to admit that we have always been aware of the different attitudes of Prime Minister Orbán and our political camp regarding Russia and Germany. This was already clear in our long conversation in Nidzica a few years ago. We knew each other from before, but it was the first time that we could formulate our positions in more depth."

To another question from the reporter, according to which the Hungarian opposition claims that the Visegrad Cooperation is dead, Kaczyński answers.

"We are by no means severing our ties. Prime Minister Morawiecki agreed with Orbán and the other partners to suspend the Visegrád group for a few weeks, which will certainly return to its useful activities later. I want to emphasize: there are differences, but we are talking about a partner who never hid his positions, who never cheated or betrayed. He has never let us down in other areas of cooperation, such as the EU."
