It is in Hungary's national economic and national security interest to build two new blocks of the Paks nuclear power plant, and Roszatom is capable of carrying out the investment. Péter Szijjártó discussed this with Alexey Likhachsov, the director general of Rosatom, in Istanbul on Thursday.

The minister stated: during the negotiation, Roszatom's leaders assured Hungary that they are still capable of carrying out the investment from a technological point of view. He added that the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority is now examining the license applications that have been submitted, and after they are received, the construction works of the power plant can move to the next phase.

"The construction of the two new blocks of nuclear power, the nuclear power plant, serves Hungary's national security, national economy, and national strategic interests, it will make Hungary's energy supply more secure and predictable," declared Péter Szijjártó.

The minister emphasized: at the end of the first quarter of the 21st century, the world, Europe and Hungary will have to face challenges that no one expected. It is not only about our physical security, but also about the security of energy supply, he added.

He emphasized: the operation of the world's energy market is burdened with amazing challenges, and countries such as Hungary, which is basically forced to import energy carriers, feel these difficulties in particular.

He stated: It is in Hungary's interest to be able to be self-sufficient in terms of energy production to the greatest extent possible, and for this, capacities are needed, and the possibility of the largest self-energy production capacity is nuclear energy.

Péter Szijjártó assessed that nuclear energy is a cheap, safe and environmentally friendly way of producing energy, and it ensures that Hungary can maintain the achievements of reducing utility bills and meet its environmental protection goals.

He pointed out that there are also international disputes and challenges with regard to energy sectors based on daily deliveries, such as natural gas and crude oil. Therefore, he continued, it is important for Hungary to strengthen nuclear energy, where nuclear fuel can be stored for many years in advance, so the use of nuclear energy ensures a significant degree of independence and stability in the energy supply.
