We are launching a utility subsidy program for the socially needy residents of Fehérvár, mayor András Cser-Palkovics announced on his Facebook page.

As he writes:

The details of the support program are being worked out, along with financial transfers to cover the program. It is expected that the August general meeting will have to decide on the exact conditions for using the support and the amounts that can be claimed, but until then, the following is already certain:

It will be possible to request a contribution to the amount of the gas bill and the electricity bill, both in such a way that the Municipality will transfer the awarded amount directly to the service provider, so the beneficiaries will receive benefits in kind.

It will also be possible to apply for a one-time, larger subsidy for the purchase of firewood, which will be transferred to the eligible applicant by the local government in one lump sum.

The range of eligible persons is determined on a social basis, primarily on the basis of income and family situation. The primary goal is to help those living alone, with low incomes, and those raising their child(ren) alone.

By definition, subsidies can only be used by those who, for justifiable and justifiable reasons, cannot fit into the average consumption limits set by the government, but their financial situation does not allow them to pay for above-average consumption.

As usual, I will be honest: in the absence of data, we currently cannot say how many people will be entitled to apply for this, so how much the support program will cost the Local Government, anything from a few tens of millions of forints to 300 million forints is possible, of course we are preparing for the worst, but the we hope for the best.

I believe that it is the moral duty of the local government and the local community to help our most downtrodden fellow human beings within reasonable limits and according to our economic possibilities - at least during the most difficult winter period. The utility subsidy program will serve this purpose. I will report with the exact details when we have completed the draft legislation, which I will submit to the General Assembly.
