The 16th census in Hungary's history will begin on October 1st, and unlike the previous ones, there will no longer be a paper-based census. The public can fill out the questionnaire online and with the help of interviewing commissioners on a tablet. Participation in the census is mandatory, the data collected here will help prepare economic, social and territorial development decisions in the future.

Enumerators will show IDs when they visit someone in person at their home. This proves that they are acting with permission and on an official matter.

However, experts from the Central Statistical Office (KSH) expect that the majority of people will fill out the census questionnaire online. This will be possible from October 1 to 16. the Néptellálás2022.hu website with the code that will be sent by mail at the end of September. Filling out the questionnaire will take about half an hour.

In 2011, the majority of people still counted with the help of enumerators. This will be possible now, between October 17 and 20.

The data will reveal family relationships, for example how many live in a family and how many are single.

The questionnaire will also cover the housing conditions. Due to energy efficiency, these are particularly important data, which can be used to see what heating options are available. The answers will help the housing modernization programs.

Living conditions have obviously changed since 1960, and so have the questions. Today, it is also necessary to answer whether they use a solar panel or a solar collector and how proficient they are in using the Internet.

The census is Hungary's largest collection of data that assesses the most important characteristics of the entire Hungarian society. It provides an accurate and detailed picture of the population's size, demographic characteristics, health status, education, employment, nationality and religious composition.

The census provides important feedback for churches, they can find out how many people belong to their faith community.

"In Hungary, we have the opportunity to live our faith, and now we are also asked about this in the census. We emphasize that, with the census, we should give an account of where we belong with a kind of confession of faith. We belong to God," said Fülöp Kocsis, Archbishop of the Greek Catholic Archdiocese of Hajdúdorog.

The latest data provide a basis for the preparation of economic, social and territorial development decisions in the future. It also makes smaller groups of society visible, such as people with disabilities.

The census is the only population data collection in which participation is mandatory, as stipulated by the law in line with EU regulations.

All data entered into the census questionnaires are used for statistical purposes only. The information is entered anonymously in the KSH database.

"When the questionnaires are closed, the data is sent directly to the KSH's encrypted server and is handled separately, the names are stored in a separate database from the other data of the questionnaire and after processing, we have to eliminate any connection between the data and the names," said Marcell Kovács, from the Central Statistics Office.
