Hanover's Green Party mayor came under fire after it was revealed that every third person employed by the city must be a migrant or have a migrant background.

According to the proposal made by the integration committee of the city government, only people with an immigrant background can apply for every third job offer.

In the first round, the goal would be for the proportion of civil servants and civil servants of foreign origin to be 17 percent by 2026. The city launches a campaign to promote the benefits of diversity; the "diversity day" should also be celebrated in local schools, anti-racism courses are intended to be held in the city offices, and a prize will be created to reward "migrant companies".

"It took a Green party mayor for real change!" - said Filiz Polat, the leader of the Bundestag faction of the German Greens, of Turkish origin, triumphantly in his Twitter message. Hannover's first man since 2019 is Belit Onay, also of Turkish origin. The capital of Lower Saxony would be the first German city to introduce a migrant quota.

I am convinced that we bear the responsibility together to ensure that every citizen of Hanover feels good and can live their lives free of discrimination, he declared.

However, not everyone liked his plan.

What happens to the remaining two-thirds of the jobs? Are they held up to the "bio-Germans"?

Alexander Graf Lambsdorff, a liberal FDP politician, sarcastically suggested. As he said, discrimination, be it negative or positive, is unconstitutional. Constitutional lawyer Arnd Diringer told the German press that the constitution clearly states that every German citizen has the right to apply for civil service positions with equal opportunity. - Quotas go against the basic principles of democracy. Even the CDU did not understand this, which introduced a 50 percent female quota in the party leadership for women, who make up a quarter of its party membership. In addition, the whole plan also violates Article 33 of the constitution, since only the aptitude, talent and experience of the applicants can be taken into account when it comes to filling a civil servant position.

In any case, we have learned by now: all three criteria can be ignored when it comes to quota and migration policy matters

- can be read in the opinion article of the Tichys Einblick news portal.

Belit Onay was previously criticized by many for saying in March 2020, when the German federal government was considering taking in migrants stranded in camps in Greece: "We have room." Meanwhile, homeless people were sent away from a homeless shelter in Hanover.
