The awards for the most prosperous settlements were presented at the award ceremony held at the Buda Campus of the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences on Friday. Debrecen, Makó, Zalakaros and Gyugy won the title of the most prosperous settlement at the 2022, now 29th award ceremony, the Hungarian Tourism Agency (MTÜ) informed MTI on Friday.

More than 50 prizes were awarded among the 2022 winners of Virágos Hungary.

MTÜ explained: in addition to a record number of applications during the country's most significant environmental beautification competition, a total of 439 applications from 339 municipalities, including 32 applicants from across the border, were judged by a professional jury of nearly 150 members in recent months.
In the category of large cities, representatives of Debrecen and cities with less than 30,000 inhabitants took home the main prize, while Zalakaros won the main prize for a small town with a population of more than 1,000 people, and among the smallest villages, Gyugy became the most prosperous settlement.
Cegléd and Balatongyörök won the special prize of the Prime Minister's Office in two categories, and the Ministry of the Interior awarded the most prosperous district of Budapest, which this year became the Xth district, among several awards. Kecskemét and Telkibánya became richer with the special award of the Hungarian Tourist Agency.

According to the announcement, the professional jury generally emphasized that the record number of applications received despite the drought summer shows how important the continuous development of the green environment is for local communities. Many settlements are reacting to the effects of climate change by changing technology and changing the planted crop culture. More and more people use perennials instead of annual flowers, or pay attention to tree planting, but the settlements have also shown good examples of using rainwater.

At the ceremony, it was remembered that this September at the award ceremony of the Entente Floral Europe competition in Balatonfüred, the international jury recognized the work done for the environmental beautification of Veresegyház, Orfű and Székesfehérvár.
Virágos Hungary, the country's most popular environmental beautification competition, which moves the most communities, will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2023, and on this occasion, the organizing committee will prepare many interesting things for the next competition season, MTÜ announced.
