The representative was fined HUF 900,000 by the Metropolitan Court in connection with the scandal in the MTVA building of the opposition in December 2018, as well as for influencing an independent representative. Varju also has to pay HUF 474,000 in court costs.
The criminal trial of the DK parliamentarian continued today at the Capital District Court with the lawyer's speech and László Varju's last word on his right, followed by the announcement of the verdict.

That is why the Gyurcsány party politician was charged

The prosecutor brought charges against the representative in April 2020 . According to one of the accusations, Varju, as a representative candidate for the DK, met an independent candidate in a café before the 2018 parliamentary elections, to whom he promised financial benefits  in exchange for his withdrawal, in order to increase his chances of winning the election. However, the independent candidate rejected the offer.

The other two charges concern the opposition's December 2018 action at the MTVA headquarters. In connection with this, the opposition representatives who entered the building on December 16 wanted to broadcast a five-point demand on public television, but the security guards prevented them from doing so. The next day, however, the opposition's scandal-mongering continued, and in the scuffle, Varju ran into the wall of the security service.

The security wanted to lead the representative out, and then - due to his violent resistance - physical coercion was used against him, however

László Varju continued to resist and caused an injury to a security guard that took more than eight days to heal.

You can read about what Varju did in the headquarters, what he said to the security guards, how he protested lying on the ground here, and you can watch recordings of the opposition action .

Hankó and Varju accuse the prosecution

we reported in our previous article , the acting prosecutor of the Central Investigative Prosecutor's Office proposed in his trial speech at the last hearing that the court declare László Varju guilty of disorderly conduct, grievous bodily harm and a crime against electoral order, and therefore sentence him to a suspended prison sentence.

Miklós Hankó Faragó, the politician's legal representative, said in his court speech on Monday that on December 16, 2018, the opposition representatives started a protest at the MTVA headquarters due to the amendment of the labor code and wanted to broadcast a five-point petition on television. As part of this, politicians - including László Varju - legally entered the building. However, the security guards unlawfully obstructed them, their goal - on higher orders - was to humiliate the opposition representatives.

According to Hankó's argument, not even the security guards,

rather, it was precisely the opposition representatives - such as László Varju - who were abused,
the DK representative was repeatedly knocked down and dragged on the ground, as a result of which he also suffered minor injuries. Hankó analyzed at length that László Varju, as a member of parliament, was considered an official person and averted an unlawful attack during the scuffle.
In relation to the crime against the electoral order, Hankó indicated that the independent representative candidate concerned had died in the meantime. Imre Horváth recorded the conversation and his deliberate aim was to provoke László Varju, to say some illegal sentence with him. However, this did not happen, only negotiations took place between the parties.
Hankó also criticized the prosecutor's office, whose work, according to him, had become highly politicized. The purpose of the prosecution is to deprive an opposition representative of his mandate and to intimidate the opposition.
According to the lawyer, the purpose of the criminal proceedings is to create a political mood.
Varju had the right to have the last word and did not fail to give a short political speech. As he said, he did not commit any crime, he is in court only because of an opinion that the government does not like. If someone was injured at all, it was not caused by him and he should have reported the security guards, who are political victims of the government. Varju emphasized that he did not commit a crime related to the election either, it was again only for a political purpose.

Crow is guilty

However, in the court's judgment announced today

found the representative guilty of disorderly conduct and a crime against electoral order, but at the same time acquitted him of the charge of serious bodily injury.
Therefore, the court sentenced the representative to a fine of HUF 900,000.
In his reasoning, the presiding judge said: The Varjus legally resided in the MTVA Kunigunda Street building in December 2018. At the same time, he cited the previous civil court verdict in the case, which stated that although the representatives were indeed legally present in the institution, László Varju wanted to enter a studio by force.
The law did not allow the representatives to interrupt the live broadcast and read their petition, the court pointed out. The behavior of the security guards was legal, so there is no legitimate defense on the part of Varju. According to the court, Varju defiantly behaved against the community, but at the same time, he did not want to intentionally injure one of the guards.
Speaking about the crime against the order of the election, the judge said: it is not at all heard that the relevant independent representative provoked Varjut, who, on the other hand, repeatedly tried to persuade Imré Horváth to withdraw.
Both the prosecution and Varju appealed against the verdict.
