Katalin Novák's position is that we demand full membership and respect at the Brussels table. There is no Hungarian future without Europe, just as there is no European future without Hungary - emphasized the President of the Republic in the interview given to Portfolio. Katalin Novák put it this way: she is not happy about the tug-of-war between the European Commission and the Hungarian government, but she agrees that the country's sovereignty must be protected.

We demand the same full membership and respect for Hungarians as the citizens of any founding or later acceding country, a regular place at the table in Brussels

- underlined the head of state, who thinks it would be good if we could finally return to cooperation based on mutual respect. But this certainly requires compromises, he pointed out. Evaluating the role of the Union, Katalin Novák further emphasized that the European Union has weakened rather than strengthened in the past decade. As he said, they have lost the United Kingdom in terms of foreign policy advocacy, and they have even fallen behind the United States and Asia in terms of demographics and competitiveness.

While a new world order is emerging, Europe has forgotten about common strategic thinking and has placed ideological issues in the center. We have to wake up - emphasized the President of the Republic, and then analyzed the Russian-Ukrainian war.

According to the head of state, by invading Ukraine, Vladimir Putin crossed the Rubicon. "Although the war is not taking place against our federal system, it is here in our immediate neighbor, and moreover, it is an attack on a country where a large number of Hungarian communities live and fight for their survival," he pointed out. That is precisely why, according to Katalin Novák, a ceasefire and peace are needed as soon as possible.

Just think about how many people's lives have been taken and how many families' futures have been destroyed by this war and senseless violence. This is not a video game, not a virtual battlefield, but bloody reality

emphasized the head of state. According to the Hungarian position - which is also shared by Pope Francis and the Holy See's diplomacy - an armistice must be concluded first, after which the basic conditions for long-term peace can be defined. As head of state, as a Christian and as a mother, I will cast my vote in favor of a ceasefire as soon as possible, he declared.

Katalin Novák also touched on the fact that many people are curious about Hungary, thanks to which she receives many official invitations. The personal meeting with presidents and prime ministers gives an opportunity to make the alliance obvious and to better understand the other's point of view. As he said, we must pay attention to the changes taking place in world politics and their effects, but we must stop the practice of someone telling us what, how and when we should or should not do.

We are an independent, sovereign, adult nation with values and interests. We must primarily take these into account and thus increase our room for maneuver, he underlined. In this regard, the head of state also emphasized that very few people know about the existence and problems of the Transcarpathian Hungarians. When they talk to the leaders of a country about the war, they always draw attention to the difficult situation of the Hungarians living in Transcarpathia.
