The former partners imposed such unacceptable conditions that they practically pushed the RMDSZ out of the government.

The Romanian Hungarian Democratic Union (RMDSZ) is not expected to take part in the new Bucharest government to be formed by the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the center-right National Liberal Party (PNL), announced Kelemen Hunor on Tuesday evening.

The president of the federation told reporters in the parliament after the negotiations with the head of state on the formation of the government and the talks with the previous coalition partners on Tuesday: the ministers of the federation did their job well, the RMDSZ also showed flexibility in redistributing the ministerial positions in order to continue joint governance, but the former partners they imposed such unacceptable conditions that practically pushed the RMDSZ out of the government.

The two Romanian parties have a parliamentary majority even without the votes of the RMDSZ.

Kelemen Hunor explained to the Hungarian public media: everyone admits that the officials of the RMDSZ at the head of the ministries performed professional, very serious, responsible and effective work, so

there is not a single argument why they should give up these ministries, when the original agreement on changing the prime minister would not have affected the RMDSZ.

When they were confronted with the fact that the Romanian parties were asking for the Ministry of Development (led by Attila Cseke), the Ministry of Environment (led by Barna Tánczos), sometimes both, they proposed compromises, but they were not accepted either - Kelemen Hunor recalled the course of the negotiations .

"From our point of view, there is nowhere to retreat any further. At times I felt as if this was planned: every time we came close to a compromise, they came with a new condition, a new idea, until we got to the point where we couldn't go any further."

- said the president of RMDSZ.

He added that until Prime Minister-designate Marcel Ciolacu, who is in charge of forming the government, presents the government's list to the parliament, the situation may change in principle, but now he doesn't really see a chance for them to continue governing together.

When asked how the RMDSZ will politicize in the opposition as the 2024 election year approaches, Kelemen Hunor said that he could not yet give an exhaustive answer.

"The most important thing is to be able to stand before our voters with a straight spine, they know that we are ready to compromise, but we are no one's doormat, they know that if we say something, we keep it, and if we deal with something, we do it seriously. The interest of the community comes first! We can obviously add the rest over time"

- the president of the RMDSZ concluded his statement.

On Tuesday, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis entrusted Marcel Ciolacut, the president of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), with the formation of a government, in accordance with previous plans. In principle, the prime minister-designate has ten days to request a vote of confidence from the parliament for the composition and program of the new government, but he said that he hopes that the cabinet he leads can take the oath of office as early as Thursday.
