Hungary is a sovereign country, whether Donald Tusk likes it or not, so he has the right to represent his own position on the matter of the war in Ukraine, according to which peace is needed as soon as possible - Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó stated in Brussels on Monday, criticizing the statement of the Polish Prime Minister.

According to the press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the head of the ministry said that during his visit to Kiev, Donald Tusk " showed a complete lack of respect and attacked the Hungarian government's position on the war in Ukraine with unsolicited words", accusing our country of "betraying Europe, being un-European" "the darkest political hell mentioning its location" .

"Now, of course, we have seen, we are seeing the events of the last few weeks in Poland, and we are seeing the Polish Prime Minister's perception of democracy. We see opposition politicians being jailed in Poland. We see that they do not tolerate opinions that differ from the government, in any way," he emphasized.

"However, the situation is that the question must still be asked, what kind of behavior is this in Europe? What kind of behavior is it to consider the existence of only one opinion acceptable? What kind of behavior is it that they don't tolerate, don't accept, don't acknowledge that there can be other opinions on a given matter?" he listed.

The head of the ministry pointed out that one of the fundamental values of the European Union is, and should be, the fact that it is not possible to sanction someone simply because they have a different opinion on a specific issue, and it is not possible to classify an opinion as un-European just because it differs from our own.

"The situation, Mr. Prime Minister Donald Tusk, is that everyone in Europe has the right to their own opinion, everyone has the right to represent their own point of view, and therefore no one can be sanctioned, no one can be classified as non-European, and especially no one can be imprisoned," he stated .

Finally, the minister emphasized that based on the events of the past weeks, months, and years, it is clear that the war in Ukraine has no solution on the battlefield.

"There is no solution on the battlefield, but more dead and more destruction every day. Therefore, Hungary continues to stand for peace. Hungary will not be willing to switch to a pro-war position, Hungary takes a pro-peace position. We think a cease-fire is needed as soon as possible, and peace negotiations must start as soon as possible," he stated.

"Hungary is a sovereign country, Hungary is a sovereign country that has the right to represent its own opinion, the right to express its own position (..) We insist on peace in Ukraine as soon as possible, even if Donald Tusk has a different opinion, and he represents a pro-war position," he concluded.
