With Kevin Csoboth's goal in the 101st minute, the Hungarian national football team defeated Scotland 1-0 in the last round group match of the European Championship in Germany in Stuttgart on Sunday, thereby maintaining its chance to reach the round of 16 by finishing third in the foursome. At the end of the group stage, the four best third out of six advance, currently the Hungarians have three points and a minus three goal difference.

Throughout the competitive meeting, the Hungarians were closer to the lead, as only the goalposts saved the rival from scoring on one occasion in both halves. In the last moments of the ten-minute extra time, at the end of a quick counter-attack, Csoboth, who came on as a substitute, scored the "stay alive" goal from Roland Sallai's rolled back ball.
Although both teams could only hope to advance to the next round, the game was primarily characterized by safety in the first few minutes, at first neither side took any risks. Although the Scots had somewhat more of the ball, at the end of the first quick Hungarian counterattack, Bolla's long-range attempt could only be blocked by the opponent's goalkeeper. Most of the minutes passed with field play between the two penalty areas, neither team was able to get behind the other's defensive line either on the wings or in the middle, so there were no chances and no shots. Both sides lacked creativity in attack. The enjoyment of the match decreased even more, because the game became fragmented due to minor irregularities, and the Hungarians came out worse because Styles, Orbán and Schäfer also received yellow cards. The biggest situation occurred in the 41st minute, when Szoboszlai was able to take a free kick from a dangerous spot, Orbán was able to head clear after his unexpected arc, the ball hit the crossbar, but the goal would not have been awarded due to offside. Overall, the Scots had more of the ball, but they didn't even have an attempt to score.

The security game of patience was left to continue, the rival was unable to reach the Hungarian goal, but Rossi's students only managed to get a shot, Sallai's attempt was easily saved by the Scottish goalkeeper. The opponent's first attempt had to wait 53 minutes, but Adams' shot went badly over the top. Sallai, who seemed to be the only one with momentum, already launched a more vigorous shot for the second time, but Hendry blocked the ball. There were blood-curdling moments at the meeting, because after Szoboszlai's pass, the Scottish goalkeeper hit the ball, covering everyone, and Varga remained almost motionless on the ground in great pain. Help arrived slowly, the Hungarian players had to urge members of the medical staff and helpers holding the veil covering Varga. Later, the stretcher was pushed onto the field by the Szoboszlais.

After long minutes of nursing - Varga was taken off the field amid a storm of applause - only the game could continue, which picked up somewhat after that. In the last quarter of an hour, the field started to split in two, because the draw was not good for either side, but no serious scoring chances were created. Szoboszlai was apparently struggling with a physical problem, because he could not get off to a vigorous start even when the area opened up for him, so the Hungarian attacks posed a much smaller threat than usual. At the end of regular time, Schäfer's rant caused excitement, Gunn had to defend. In the ten-minute extra time, the Hungarians started to attack, first Szoboszlai missed the bottom left corner, then Csoboth stormed on the right side, but hit the right post. By the end, the field was completely split in two, at which point the teams frantically rushed for the winning - and hopefully advancing - goal, Gulácsi had to make a big save for the first time in this period. When it seemed that there would be no goal even in the big rush, Sallai, who was chosen as the best of the match, served Csoboth perfectly after advancing on the right side, who decided the match and shot the national team to third place in the group.

After the goal, the team and its fans celebrated for several minutes, as they did a few minutes later, after the whistle.
